I served in Charlie Battery, in the engineer/generator section, from August 1962 to June 1965, when I rotated back to the states. I am glad, and appreciative, for this blog; and commend all those responsible for creating this wealth of information regarding Charlie Battery and its history as well as reuniting (through the internet) many of the personnel who served in the unit. My experiences in Charlie Battery were extremely pleasant and rewarding, and I would enjoy hearing from anyone who remembers me.

Charlie Battery was my home from Jan 61 to Sept 62. Fire Control Plt Ldr. Lt Ken Oakberg my room mate.
Now semi-retired Engr. Worked for Navy shipyard here, Army Corps of Engrs in Frankfurt 1978 - 1983.
Visited C Btry in Aug 1982. Not much left.
Discouraging to see a good number of the promising kids that worked at C Btry when I was Lt now on honor roll. But, good to see that a good number of Fasching vets are still with us.

I'm the youngest son of M/Sgt James O. Butler who was platoon Sgt. He arrived in Germany in 1957. The family came over in 1958 and lived first in Karlshruh and then in Heilbronn. We lived in dependent housing (three story apartments of 18 units/building. We returned to the U.S. in October, 1960. M/Sgt Butler spent the remainder of his military career at a Nike base near Austin, Texas as First Sgt. And retired in 1963. He died in 1971.

My dad's records were all lost in a major fire at the records center so I was trying to put together a history of his military career using the Internet when I ran across his name on the Thanksgiving pamphlet on this website. From there, with Dean's help I was able to piece it all together for his Germany tour.

Now I still have to get on to his stint in WWII Pacific Theater (Leyte amphibious assault and the invasion at Okinawa) and the Korean War where he was with the first troops sent from Japan to stop the advance of the North Korean invading army. He was most fortunate to be alive to spend his tour in Germany. We were happy to provide Dean with a few photos he used on the site. The chapel photo from Heilbronn was where we attended church and was taken out our picture window in the apartment.
