HeilbronnerStraße, the main street in Brackenheim 1967, facing towards Haberschlacht. The building on the right side of the street at the corner is the bank, and the newest building in town.

The store that is next to their apartment entrance, is discussed in the Charlotte Standerfer photo below, and is down around the corner just passed the bank.

Along with the images provided by the Standerfers were two period postcards of Brackenheim that I have scanned and provide for you here. So “Click Here” to view this visual history. And remember... for the optimal viewing experience maximize your browser window when the PDF opens.

The VW belongs to John & Charlotte Standerfer.

Saturday Morning market day in Brackenheim in November, 1966.

The Name of Brackenheim - see the heraldry - it shows a dog. This dog was a so called Bracke. A Bracke was a very good dog for hunting - but only important and privileged persons (rich, aristocracies) had the right of hunting and so they had this dog and used it for giving the name to the place ...

Brackenheim was and still is the center of the geographic region known as “The Zabergäu”, - administrations (formerly more important), schools, culture, now for shopping etc.... For more information about The Zabergäu “Click Here” please.

By the way: It might be interesting for Californians, San Franciscoer - look Google - the so called “Cattle-King” of California, Henry Miller - once the largest land owner of USA - was borne In Brackenheim (1827-1916). He emigrated for the USA (1844-18467) where he changed his name (borne Kreiser) because of nebulous circumstances ... At his death he owned between 20 and 40 million of Dollars ... He gave a big donation to his birth-place ...

Another great personality borne in Brackenheim was Theodor Heuss (1884). He spent childhood (6 years) in Brackenheim. Then the family moved to Heilbronn where he grew up. After war at foundation of the Bundesrepublik (= Federal Republik) he was the first president of the “new” Germany (1949-1959 / ten years, longer is not possible).

He was a very much appreciated person, very popular (called “Papa Heuss” - even all over Germany) also originality - no nazi past - in no way integrated - a very qualified journalist, very cultured, also literate, In his youth-time he had contacts with people like Albert Schweitzer etc. - very much accepted also in other countries in this hard period of the so called “After war-Time” - a very good man in a very tough job ....

Like in the other places there has occurred much change during the time since the 1960s. By returning here many people who had been away a longer time have difficulties in orientation at the first moments.
